Checking In (post dissertation defense "meeting")

Hey, everyone:

This blog as been weirdly quiet these past six weeks.  Where is everyone?  How are you all doing?

Just a quick update with me.  For reasons that will very quickly become apparent, I can't write much here as this is a public space.  While I have a good sense of who peeks in to this blog (a statcounter), I don't know who these folks are in reality.  So best bet?  Say nothing incriminating.  :-)

I submitted my dissertation to my committee about six weeks ago.  The defense was scheduled for yesterday (November 19th).  There was, um ... , dissention, and um ..., issues, and um ..., differences that I didn't know about or was prepared for.  Instead of a defense, we had a "meeting."  My defense has been rescheduled for December 10th.

As you probably understand, this has been a very very difficult experience.  (Heh, and I thought writing the damn thing was hard enough.)  I'm not yet sure what to expect in three weeks.  Probably everything will be fine, but I have very little confidence of that fact right now.

I know how busy you all are (and would like to hear how you are all doing), but any extra good vibes you might have going into the next three weeks?  I could use them.

I totally feel for you and hope that your corrections run smoothly. Best of luck on the 10th.

Your post really resonated with me because my advisor left for a family emergency 2 minutes before my defense and my committee members seriously contemplated rescheduling. I know it's hard to move your defense around but you already have a new date and you'll be great! Sending you lots of good luck vibes!!!

i just stumbled across your blog while looking for some phd comics i could send to a friend who is in the middle of writing her dissertation (and wondering why the heck she is paying to feel this stressed!). another friend recently submitted and ran head-on into complications as well. it is a shocking blow--

but i'll tell you what he told me, "i get by with a little help from my friends." i hope that's not too corny, but lean on your friends now, like you're doing and willfully push negativity from your mind. maybe go out and do something fun, weird, and totally different from what you usually do. we took a Japanese paper wire lamp shade making class this weekend. trying not to burn myself while melting the wire together really took our minds off of our dissertations! ;)

and congrats on submitting! that is a major accomplishment in and of itself!

best of luck,
fellow phd traveler

Students taking up their PhDs often face the problem of how to balance their work, family and studies. More often than not, they go through a lot of sacrifices in time management. One area could be an impediment to another and this may run like a never ending cycle of what needs to be prioritized in a given a situation.
